Jim said that you could smell it before you saw it. To get
here, we traversed 68 miles up the Yangtze River, with lots of industry along
the banks. Our first sight of the city was amazement. The buildings are
incredible works of architecture, soaring into the sky. Everything you’ve heard
about the haze in China is true. It’s not our picture quality, this is what the
sky looks like.
Our tour was called 2lst Century, as we rode a super high
speed elevator 340.1 meters to the 88th floor of the Jin Mao
building, which is one of the tallest buildings in the world.
From there we
proceeded to the Shanghai Maglev Train, “the fastest ground transport…in the
present world” according to Guinness Book of Records. Imagine traveling 19 miles
in 8 minutes at 267 mph.
You have to see this city to understand its energy, drive
and allure. All we can say about Shanghai is that we have met the future…and
the future is now.
What Village Life Is
Like
Today we visited a village in the countryside that they call
the Venice of China. It is filled with canals; and gondola-like boats are used
to move people around. It was colorful and quite interesting to see the
contrast between the modern city and this village. Again, the food stalls
turned out to be much more interesting than the souvenir shops.
